Chino Valley's New Disc Golf Course Opened First. The State Park Is Still Taking Shape.

Chino Valley's New Disc Golf Course Opened First. The State Park Is Still Taking Shape.

If you went looking for Chino Valley's new disc golf course this spring, you didn't use a street address. You used the town's own directions, posted like a set of instructions for finding a friend's backyard barbecue: head east on Perkinsville Road, turn left onto Jerome Junction, turn right onto Rodeo Drive, then look for the field east of the Utilities Building. That's Old Home Manor, and as of this year, it's home to Chino Valley's first 18-hole disc golf course.

Meanwhile, a few miles north, the project that's gotten the bigger headlines since 2024 still doesn't have a trailhead sign you could follow with a phone screenshot. Verde River Headwaters State Park has 734 protected acres, a multi-agency partnership, and a Congressional designation in the works for the river itself. What it doesn't have yet is an opening date.

That gap between what got built and what's still being planned says something about how recreation actually shows up in a small town, and it's worth understanding before you assume the biggest announcement is the one that changes your weekend first.

The $50,000 Course That Actually Opened

The two projects differ a great deal in scale. A $50,000 T-Mobile Hometown Grant built an 18-hole disc golf course at Old Home Manor, and the course had its grand opening on April 14 with roughly 50 dignitaries in attendance, according to the Daily Courier. Mayor Tom Armstrong, Vice Mayor Eric Granillo, and Councilman Larry Holt were there, along with the Chino Valley Chamber of Commerce, all marking the arrival of something residents can walk onto today.

The town's existing nine-hole course, tucked next to the Community Center on North Road 1 East, isn't being abandoned so much as reassigned. Once the new course at Old Home Manor is fully established, the old nine-hole layout is slated to become pickleball courts, according to the same reporting. That's a tidy trade: one recreation amenity converts into a different one, and the total footprint of things to do in town actually grows.

For a project that started as a single grant announcement in March, that's a fast turnaround. Grant to groundbreaking to grand opening, all inside about a month, based on the town's own posted timeline.

The Larger Project Is Still Taking Shape

Contrast that with Verde River Headwaters State Park, which has been in the news since March 2024, when the Trust for Public Land closed on 734 acres at Del Rio Springs. The purchase leaned on a $6 million appropriation from the Arizona Legislature, championed by Senator Sine Kerr and Representative Selina Bliss, with the deal itself structured as a partnership between TPL, Arizona State Parks and Trails, Yavapai County, and the Nature Conservancy.

What the land actually holds is remarkable. This is where Fort Whipple stood in December 1863, making it the site of Arizona's first territorial government before it relocated to Prescott the following year. The springs here fed a 20-mile wooden pipeline that supplied Prescott's drinking water into the 1910s. Sullivan Lake, built by a WPA dam in the 1930s, still sits on the property, and the surrounding cottonwoods have hosted nesting bald eagles. The long-term plan calls for extending the Peavine National Recreation Trail 25 miles, connecting it all the way from Watson Lake and the Granite Dells in Prescott out to the river's headwaters.

None of that is finished. The most recent update, from earlier this year, describes TPL acquiring an additional 23-acre inholding within the park boundary, containing historic buildings the town now plans to manage and eventually interpret for the public. It's meaningful progress. It is also, roughly two and a half years after the land deal closed, still a land acquisition update rather than a ribbon cutting. There's no published opening date for hiking, camping, or trail access, and the park's own project pages still describe amenities in future tense.

Put plainly: the $50,000 project delivered in weeks. The multi-million-dollar project, with legislative backing and a genuinely historic story to tell, is still working through parcel-by-parcel acquisition. If you're planning a weekend around one of these, the disc golf course is the one you can actually play right now.

Where To Go After 18 Holes

Old Home Manor sits close enough to town that a round of disc golf pairs naturally with dinner, and Chino Valley's dining scene has more range than its size would suggest.

  • Essence Kitchen + Bar, the town's flagship dinner spot, is run by husband-and-wife team Jason and Julia, who moved back to Julia's hometown to open it after their kids were grown. The menu changes seasonally under Chef Jason.
  • Winey Cats, at Granite Creek Vineyards, is open to the public only on weekends. Bring your own food, pick from a wine list that includes a sweet Moscato, and expect a few resident cats to make an appearance.
  • El Paraiso blends Mexican and Italian on one menu, an unusual pairing that regulars say works better than it sounds.
  • Casa Grande is the reliable, kid-friendly Mexican spot locals keep coming back to.
  • Arturo's runs Taco Tuesday and Tostada Thursday specials worth building a weekly routine around.
  • Jed's Sandwich Shop & Catering does lunch sandwiches and homemade cookies, good for grabbing something to go before heading into the nearby Prescott National Forest.
  • Guy & Grayson's serves food-truck-style burgers, including a green hatch chile cheeseburger with bacon that's become something of a local rite of passage.
  • Lucy's Bar & Grill is casual and affordable, with burgers starting around $14 and cocktails around $12.
  • Aroma Pizza keeps its menu tight, built around a garlic and olive oil pie with a crust that holds up as leftovers.

None of these are new this year. What's new is having a reason to end up in that part of town more often, now that Old Home Manor gives people somewhere to go before dinner.

What This Actually Tells You

Chino Valley's town government spent the first half of 2026 proving that a modest grant, aimed narrowly and executed quickly, can put something usable on the ground faster than a headline project with legislative funding and a much bigger story behind it. That's not a knock on the state park. It's a reminder that "announced" and "open" are different milestones, and the gap between them can run for years even when the land is already secured.

If you're already living here and wondering how these two projects, the one that delivered and the one still working through paperwork, might shape property values along that stretch of Perkinsville Road over time, Josh Day Real Estate tracks exactly this kind of local movement.
